Overnight Camp Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the adult
supervision like at camp?
All of the staff members sleep
in the dorms with the campers. The UCONN police patrol the campus, as well as
the dorms. The campers travel with their teammates and coach throughout the day.
There should never be a time when campers are by themselves.
- Are there triple
rooms available?
Although we have some large
rooms available, ALL of our rooms are doubles, we do not have any triples.
- What if my child is not
attending with a friend, will she have a roommate?
All children are assigned
roommates at the beginning of camp. If your daughter is attending without a friend,
we do our very best to find someone that is entering the same grade and is from
a nearby town so that they can maintain their friendship after camp has ended.
In the event that your daughters' roommate becomes sick or cannot come to camp
at the last minute, we will find a roommate for her; she will not sleep alone.
We will assign her a roommate at the conclusion of activities on the first night
(approximately 9:30pm).
- Cancellation Policy
Full refunds are available up to April 1st. An administrative fee will be deducted
for processing cancellations. After April 1st, no refunds will be issued for
any reason.

- Are there phones in the
dorms?
There are NO pay phone
in the dorms or in Gampel Pavillion.
- What are meals like?
We eat all of our meals in
a UCONN cafeteria. All of the food is served buffet style. It is an all-you-can-eat
environment at each meal. There is a wide selection at meals; even picky eaters
should be able to find something to eat! There is also a vegetarian selection
at each meal. They usually have a pasta bar at dinner, a salad bar at all meals,
lots of fruit and drinks, ice cream, the regular hot food service, a sandwich
bar, etc. There are many options and everyone should be able to find something
that they like. If you have a food allergy you should contact the UConn catering
office at 860-486-5053
- Can I watch my daughter
play?
After drop-off, parents are
welcome ONLY on
the last day of camp after lunch.
- Should my daughter bring
spending money?
We have a camp store that
is available to all of our campers. We DO NOT encourage the campers to have cash.
We ask that at registration you make a cash deposit into the camp store. Your
daughter then charges against that amount all week. On the last morning of camp
we refund the money that your daughter has not used. At the camp store we sell
shorts, t-shirts, candy, and drinks.
- Will my 7th grader be
playing with a 10th grader?
No, the campers are divided
into RANDOM teams according to their age group. On the first night of camp we
have evaluation games. If a player is extremely good and needs to be moved to
a higher level then we will make the trade on the first full day of camp. We
also make trades so that the teams are even. We don't want one team losing every
game and another team winning every game. The goal is to have fun and improve,
not necessarily to win every game.
- Can I request that my
daughter be on a certain team or on a team with a specific friend?
No, the teams are randomly
assigned so that it is fair for everyone. The teams are computer generated so
that it is completely random and fair for everyone.
- How much interaction will
my daughter have with the UCONN players?
We guarantee that at least
two UCONN players work at each camp. Each of our players teaches a station, so
your daughter will work directly with our players during stations. They also
eat all of their meals with the campers, etc. We all live together as one big
happy family!
- What are stations?
Stations are one of the most
important parts of camp. Stations are where your daughter will learn the majority
of her skill improvement. Each team rotates from station to station improving
different skills. One station is shooting, one is rebounding, etc.
- Is there any time to
go swimming?
No. At our camp we concentrate
on basketball. The University does not have enough swimming facilities and lifeguards
to accommodate a camp as large as ours. We do put a bathing suit on the "to-bring" list
that we mail to your home. We put this on the list because some of the younger
campers are not comfortable with the shower situation, so they feel better wearing
a bathing suit.
- What
are the dorms like?
We live in regular UCONN dorms.
Each floor has a large bathroom to accommodate the entire floor. A wall separates
each shower. The shower lines are usually long at night. Bring flip-flops to
wear in the shower! :) The dorms are not air-conditioned, so bring a fan for
comfort. The hall lights are left on all night, but if you feel that your daughter
might need more light you may want to bring a nightlight. The beds are bunk beds.
If you take the beds down, they must be put back up on the day that you leave.
- Is
there medical staff available during the evening?
Our medical staff is available
to the campers 24 hours a day. The campers are told on the first day of camp
where to find the medical staff during all hours of the day, it is very important
that they listen to orientation.
-
Are cell phones allowed?
While we do not encourage cell phones at camp, we know that 90% of parents
will send them. There are specific rules regarding cell phones. The first
is that they are not allowed anywhere but in the campers room. If
they are found in the gym, cafeteria, or walking to a basketball site they
will be confiscated for the remainder of camp and returned at check-out.
Phones will also be lost if we find a camper on the phone after lights out
at 11pm. As a parent, please realize that some children become more homesick
when they are able to call home from their rooms each time they return to
the room.
-
UCONN CO-OP
Campers are not allowed in
the UCONN CO-OP; if they are found in the CO-OP (campus store) they will be asked
to leave camp. Parents are more than welcome to take campers shopping in the
CO-OP Before or After the camp session. Our camp store will have "daily" needs
for the campers.
- Heath History
Forms
We have had enormous
parent confusion regarding the medical history and authorization to dispense
medicine forms in the past. This year we have two mandatory health forms:
-
The Physical form is required for all campers, must be completely filled
out and signed by a doctor and a parent
.
-
The Medication authorization form is required for your daughter to take any medication at camp. If you want to authorize the camp to administer medication as needed to your
daughter, a doctor must fill out the Medication Authorization form (with dosage
amount) for a camper to take either a prescription OR over the counter
medication. Please - only one medication per form. -
The form must be completed by
June 1st and mailed in with all other forms. Please know that we will NOT
give your daughter Tylenol, Advil, etc without the form being signed by a doctor
and you providing the medicine. As an example, if your daughter develops a headache,
cramps, or suffers a minor strain, we will NOT give
her Tylenol/Advil, etc without the form being signed by a doctor and you providing
the medicine. We hope this clarifies any questions. We expect that all campers
will turn in a form prior to June 1st, and will turn the actual medicine in
to the medical staff at camp registration the first day.
The state also mandates
that campers are not allowed to have any medicine (except inhalers) in their
gym bag (this includes Tylenol), or in their room. The state inspector may check
open bags and rooms when we are inspected. Anything found will result in an infraction
for the camp.
If your daughter is diabetic or has a life threatening illness, the state requires
an additional form for your daughter's doctor to complete. Please e-mail the
camp for this form.
- Is
there a refrigerator, microwave, TV or air-conditioner in the room?
No, and only refrigerators
are allowed.
- Can I wear jewelery, hats
or other adornment?
No, please leave these items
at home.
- Can I bring an iPod,
MP3 player, etc?
You may bring these items,
but they are only to be used in your room, not walking to the gym, in the gym
or in the cafeteria, and we are not responsible for their safe-keeping.
- Does the camp
provide any transportation to and from the airport?
No, we do not provide transportation to and from the airport at this time.
We thank all of you for your interest in the Connecticut Girls' Basketball
Camp!
